Good Foundation for Development Staff

This book was the textbook for my class in Development of Nonprofits. Prior to this class, I have not had much exposure to the development side of things in the nonprofit world. This is in spite of five years at a nonprofit and the introductory class to all nonprofit issues (Used the heavy and deep Jossey Bass Handbook for that class). Basically, this means that this book is my touchstone for Development. Overall it is good for someone who is a basic beginner, with a nice step-by-step look and lots of charts and graphs that could be used as template were I ever needed to fill a development role (though I hope that I will never be in charge of it, the goal is to be an Executive Director at some point so it will be on my plate).

The only real criticism is that it feels a bit dated. There’s not much consciousness of the connected world in terms of fund raising – though that may because of the very limited returns that come of it (when development is all about relationship building, you have to maintain your network somehow, right?). Basically, if this is for you class, it won’t be your least favorite textbook ever, and it might have some utility after the fact, so it’s hard to go wrong here.

Stanley Weinstein is one of the very best in the business. I've attended his workshops and had numerous conversations with him. This is one of the best books on fundraising management ever written. Weinstein's comprehensive, no-nonsense methodology provides a resource development blueprint for nonprofit organizations of all sizes. He covers it all from the simple ask, to capital campaigns, major gifts, annual giving campaigns, grantsmanship, and more. He also understands and addresses the pressures faced by many nonprofit managers and development officers who are understaffed, misunderstood, and expected to work miracles in order to keep their organizations solvent. If you work in the nonprofit sector, this is a great book. If you are a professional fundraiser or a nonprofit manager this book is a mandatory part of your professional library, and one that you will use on a regular basis--it has been for me and I can't possibly rate this high enough.

Access Code Doesn't Work

I rented this version for the purpose of having an access code, rather than renting the cheaper option of just the book for $20. The book came with an access code but it was already used and did not serve its purpose so now I have to spend an extra $60 just to get the code yet again. While it says it comes with the code, it will probably won't work so do not waste your time and money and get just the book instead.

exactly what I needed for my math course

This book is exactly what I needed for my math class. It is what was listed on the syllabus and it worked just as it was intended to. The examples were easy enough to follow along with and the concepts were explained well. My success in the course, however, was dependent on me paying attention in class and taking extra time out of my schedule to spend in the math lab getting extra instruction. I am not good at math and was able to do well not only because of this book, but it was a good starting point. I did not need an access code so that was not a concern of mine when I ordered this book. If your syllabus says this is the book that you need I would recommend that you get it because math is a course where having the book makes a big difference.

Extremely unhappy with this product. I rented this book with the access card which costed more and it won't allow me to use it because its already been used under some else's account. No information was given to further access the account. Would not recommend!!!!!!!

Mind Boggling

This book had two reviewers before me, one is unintelligible and the other admits that they haven't read the book. I have read it and it's implications are mind boggling. Usually books that deal with related subjects are written by crack-pots and people who don't fully understand the science they write about. Professor Burr was E. K. Hunt Professor of Anatomy at Yale University School of Medicine so he was as main stream as you can get. And, you can rest assured that he understood the science and implications behind his research.

Briefly speaking Dr. Burr discovered that every living thing generates an electro-dynamic field that serves as a matrix directing it's growth. He called these living fields "L-fields". The L-field maintains the arrangement of whatever material is within it, no matter how often that material changes. L-fields determine the shape, and are determined by the body generating them.

Dr. Burr wrote: "The following theory may then be formulated. The pattern or organization of any biological system is established by a complex electro-dynamic field which is in part determined by it's atomic physio-chemical components and which in part determines the behavior and orientation of those components. This field is electrical in the physical sense and by it's properties relates the entities of the biological system in a characteristic pattern and is itself, in part,a result of the existence of those entities. It determines and is determined by the components.

More than establishing pattern, it must maintain pattern in the midst of a physio-chemical flux. Therefore, it must regulate and control living things. It must be the mechanism, the outcome of whose activity is wholeness, organization, and continuity."

Dr. Burr found that a study of L-fields could predict growth and dis-ease in a body. He worked with, what some call, "the energy body" to predict the growth and disease of the physical body. This means we are susceptible to the ebb and flow of electromagnetic fields in the rest of the universe. This was discovered by a main-stream scientist!! Since him not many main-stream scientists have touched this research even though it's implications could completely change our world view!

Usually one has to read a book about, what the Chinese call 'Chi'; the Japanese 'Ki' and the Indians 'Prana', to get a taste of where Dr. Burrs research can take us. Unfortunately, such works usually contain so much pseudo-science and Eastern philosophy that one easily gets lost in it.

If you want the real science behind all this...read Dr. Burrs book. It will boggle your mind!!

I have not yet read this book, but in the absence of any other reviews, I should point out that it is a classic frequently referred to in many other books on energy medicine. Burr was a professor at Yale who did experiments in the 1970s and was able to detect electrical fields around plants and animals, which he called the "l-field" or "life field." This book appears to be a summary of his findings and their implications, written for the lay person, followed by the technical results of his experiments for those who may wish to read his methodology for himself and possibly repeat it.

Eric Schickler is the author of Disjointed Pluralism: Institutional Innovation and the Development of the U.S. Congress (Princeton University Press, 2001) and co-author, with Greg Wawro, of Filibuster: Obstruction and Lawmaking in the U.S. Senate (Princeton University Press, 2006). Both books received APSA's Richard F. Fenno Award for the best book published on legislative politics. He is also co-author of Partisan Hearts and Minds (with Donald Green and Bradley Palmquist), which was published in 2002 (Yale University Press). He has authored or co-authored articles in the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, Legislative Studies Quarterly, Comparative Political Studies, Studies in American Political Development, Public Opinion Quarterly, and Social Science History. He is Jeffrey and Ashley McDermott Chair in Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley.

Frances E. Toward a new relationship to ancient thought

MODERNITY AND PLATO is a groundbreaking work, and the kind of text rarely translated in its entirety, for which we have to thank the extraordinary efforts of its translator, Vishwa Adluri. Most translators will focus their effort on reports of new research, rather than on a wide ranging but closely argued interpretive text such as this, with the power to transform completely our perspective upon "antiquity" and "modernity".

It would certainly be as much as one would expect from a book of this length to reorient our interpretation of the essential import of Platonism, as this book does through its patient insistence that the insight guiding the whole Hellenic philosophical tradition beginning from Parmenides is that "only something that is *some one thing* is cognizable," (p. 58). But Schmitt goes on to provide, in addition, a comprehensive historical and metaphysical critique of modernity's self understanding and of its key intellectual moments, as well as sketches of how a renewed understanding of the Platonic and Aristotelian legacy could help to chart a course beyond impasses of modernity in several critical areas.

In the face of such a work, any criticism based upon narrower concerns and preoccupations seems less than relevant. What matters, I would say, is for specialists in any of the fields treated in this book, as well as any who would engage in serious discourse deploying the global category of "modernity", to absorb Schmitt's argument and allow it to inform their own projects.
