Helminski was the first woman to publish an English translation of the Qur'an and has built a career out of reprinting classic Sufi materials. This collection of primary sources casts a spotlight on the roles women have played in Sufi history: because Sufism sheds hierarchical and social distinctions in favor of a total consummation with the Beloved (Allah), women have always held an important position, says Helminski. The collection opens with early writings about Sufi women, most of which were written by men, and some of which have only recently been made available in English. Here we learn of Rabi'a al-'Adawiyya, an eighth-century saint about whom many legends were composed, and the ninth-century healer Lady Nafisa, who was renowned for her Qur'anic knowledge and whose tomb is still a sacred destination for spiritual pilgrims of many religious traditions. Helminski goes on to offer writings by and about Sufi women up to the present day, including poetry (Rumi has some competition!), folklore, prayers, songs and journal entries. Helminski does a fine job of introducing each subject, placing each shaykha (female teacher) in her historical context and explaining why she should be remembered. Some of the contemporary women are particularly interesting, such as Russian-born Sufi author Irina Tweedie, who describes her gradual path toward Sufism. This collection of women's voices is a rich and varied resource for understanding women of "The Way."

Wonderful Stories of Women Sufi Mystics, HIstorical and Contemporary

What a gem of a book! This book provides profiles of both historical and contemporary female Sufi practitioners and mystics. Original writings from these women are interspersed whenever possible, and plenty of explanation is provided to help a reader understand Sufi symbolism and rituals. In this way, it serves as both an excellent introduction to Sufism itself, in all its varied lineages, and as an inspiration of feminine spirituality for women of any faith. My personal favorites were portraits of early Sufi saint Rabia Basra, whose humility and devotion were legendary, Umm 'Abdallah whose profound teaching dreams and visions we only know of through her Sufi scholar husband, and the women of the Mevlevi order, contemporaries of Rumi, perhaps the best-known Sufi mystic (certainly the most tweeted!) I highly recommend this for anyone interested in feminine spirituality, historical women mystics, and/or Sufism.

Decent but not for me

I really like the fresh ideas that this book shows, as a student of electronics I always like books with new ideas, this book however seems like it's missing something. I don't know what exactly, sorry. If you are looking into this book, I would suggest you look into Make Magazine, it's along the same lines but you will see many more projects and I think you will get many more ideas from it.

A Nice and Quick Easy Read

I didn’t have extremely high expectations going into Taking Chances because I have never read anything by M. Andrews before, however I did win a paperback copy of her debut novel that I’m really excited to get to.

I went into Taking Chances for a light, quick and easy read and it most definitely was a light, quick and easy read.

The concept of Taking Chances was a bit clich� (the whole falling for your boss thing). I did like the idea of an actor falling for his publicist.

I did find the story was a bit too rushed and I felt like it didn’t have enough time to build so that I could believe that the romance was real. I felt like a little more of a backstory would have made this a five star novella for me.

The characters in Taking Chances are Nina and Jason. At times, I couldn’t separate their point of views because they sounded a bit the same. I did like Nina better than Jason however. I didn’t think the characters grew a whole lot in the little time we had them but there is another part to this novella coming soon so I think that may help me love these characters.

I have seen on M. Andrews’ Instagram that she is working on the second part of the novella and I plan on checking it out. I wasn’t entirely impressed with this one, I definitely see potential in M. Andrews and I plan on reading more of her work.

Best short story I've ever read

This is a short story that will make you feel as satisfied as you would having read a 400 page novel.

This story was so great. I was hooked the second I started reading and couldn't put it down until I read every last word. That is what M. Andrews does to you. I was completely engrossed in Jason and Nina's story and relationship and when it ended I could not have been any happier with the end result. For something so short I was amazed at the fact that it felt so complete with enough background information and story to not leave me dying for more. I mean, I would be happy to read more of these two amazing characters, but I don't need another story from them. Nina is a feisty assistant for Jason, a big Hollywood star. I like that she doesn't take his crap and puts him in his place. She is a strong character. I liked that there was no drama between the two despite Jason having been a complete manwhore who all of a sudden changes somewhat overnight and wants Nina permanently despite their working relationship. OMG it was so perfect and hot seeing them take a chance on one another despite their unfortunate situation.

This book will not leave you disappointed. I highly recommend it.

hot and an awesome hot fast read

OMFG this book was hot!!! I didn't realize it was a novella so this book was hot, sexy, hot and an awesome hot fast read. Did I mention it was HOTT??!! Jason is a smooth dirty talker. Once he has made a decision about Nina he doesn't hold back and I love it. Once you make the decision to go for something that you want and have been wanting for a long time then why should you? I LOVE Nina!!! She is a major smart-ass and the way she kicked the bimbo out of Jason's room was priceless!!! I was so happy that Nina also decided to give in and let things happen with Jason. She trusted him 100% and it showed and she let herself go and be herself and embrace it all. The sex was hot and panty melting! I just really wish this book was longer because I wasn't ready for it to be over! I want more of Jason and Nina and I want more of their story! Maybe we will get more of them in the other books to come in this series!

You haven't read this yet then you need to do ASAP. If you love The Big Gamble then you need to read this!!!! Wonderful!!

Rating depends on reason for reading

I saw a blurb on some scifi show regarding Edward Leedskalnin and his Coral Castle, which prompted me to do more research on the Internet. I was fascinated and curious and I thought I knew what I was getting into when I purchased this book along with "How to Read His Writings" by Marlinski. My complaint is about the reprint and editing of "Magnetic Currents" and not about the content or Ed's writing technique. If you want to try to decode Ed's notebooks, DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION (Reprint by Health Research). They fixed spelling, grammar and did not use the original type fonts - all of which are believed to be clues about his work. They did not use any of the pictures from his original pamphlets, so that part of the puzzle is also missing. I gave it only one star because I could not use it for the reason I purchased it. If you buy this book to learn more about magnetic currents, I'm not sure you'll be too happy, either. Ed is kind of hard to follow, which makes me think there is more to his writing than his words. The Coral Castle website has a Gift Shop where they sell his writings, but I don't know if the booklets are copies of the originals or if they are also selling a "fixed" version.

Difficult to read, but still very interesting

Mr. Leedskalnin's book is difficult to read, but one must consider that English was not his native tongue. According to those who knew him, he was very friendly and extremely intelligent, but also entirely secretive about certain things. For example, he claimed to know how the pyramids were built, and he also stated that he knew the secrets of anti-gravity. Of the latter, at least, he proved it by creating Coral Castle near Homestead, Florida -- in the process he managed to lift numerous up-to-30-ton blocks of coral WITHOUT MODERN MACHINERY. (Now that is a wonder.) Perhaps my fascination with this man colors my opinion of him, but I can overlook his misspelled words, et cetera, when I consider his intelligence. (In my own personal life, I happen to have a younger brother who is dyslexic and blind in one eye -- he can barely spell/write -- but he's also one of the most brilliant people I've ever known.) In any case, anyone thinking of reading or purchasing this book needs to prepare for its difficult style of wording. There will be a great deal of reading and re-reading, plus deciphering to be done.

This book doesn't contain ANY of the diagrams Ed created to go with the text. It's impossible to understand without them.

I found a copy of them online, and it helped a LOT.

I can't draw so this is my kind of painting instruction book

I just received this book and love it. I have bought watercolor "ready to paint" books by Wendy Jelbert before but I wanted to see if could do them in acrylic paint. At least one picture in this book is a duplicate of one from a watercolor instruction book, but that is fine with me. The patterns and instructions are great. One tiny thing is Wendy's description of hot and cold pressed papers. Since she seems to be British she calls "cold press" as NOT. I had seen this word before but had to go through several of my other books to make sure I understanding her right.
The other problem I have with the book is a little more serious. Several of the lessons in the book call for masking fluid to be applied before painting the picture. That would be fine, but the instructions say to apply it "as shown in the picture". The picture is very small, maybe 1.5"x2", and is of the traced pattern on the watercolor paper. Since the tracing is gray on white and the masking fluid appears to be a light gray I can't see it at all. On the poppy picture I can figure it out by looking at another picture of it being painted. On the foxglove picture I can't tell where it is supposed to go at all. There is another picture of hanging baskets of flowers on a building facade; that one uses lots of masking fluid and I doubt I would be able to figure out where it should go. I have emailed the printing company and asked for larger images to be emailed to me, so I will see if they respond. Acrylic paints are much more forgiving than watercolor so I would think it wouldn't be that hard to add white highlights as desired, but some darker colors are very hard to hide even with white acrylic paint.

update 11/7/2014: I emailed the publishing company yesterday about the instructions for the masking fluid pictures being too small, and I'm very happy to say that today I received an email from the editor of the book with attached pictures of the masking fluid application that I could enlarge. Isn't it nice when companies have great customer service? (Thanks, Roger.)

Flowers in Acrylics

Fun projects to work with in this book and I would recommend buying this book if you love painting still work in flowers.I loved using the transparencies and wish there was one for each page in newer issues and the print on both sides on the book tracings. I used a overhead projector to image the outlines onto the blank canvas and found that I could get the right size and perspective this way?
Easily finished a very good work in one day with this book.

Since early childhood, Laura was never allowed to express her feelings without being accused of backchatting. Her mother was suicidal, and her father liked his drink. To escape from all this, she would often daydream and go into a fantasy world of her own. Laura was often bullied at school until one day, she learnt to stick up for herself. As she grew up, she fell madly in love, only to be rejected when she was four and a half months pregnant and had to bring up her daughter on her own. She eventually made the biggest mistake of her life when she found herself trapped in a loveless marriage. Laura was divorced after three years, only to be trapped again when she met someone whom she believed could love her unconditionally.

A friend recommended this book to me and I am so very glad that they did because I thoroughly enjoyed taking this emotional journey with Laura.
Her book is written in such a way that I could not put it down, I just had to continue reading to see what happened next and how it all turned out for her.
Reading about her life, I now have a better understanding of what it must have been like growing up with no love or encouragement from your mother.
Laura has been through so much in her lifetime, her experiences gave her the strength and determination to try and make a better life for her daughter, whom she obviously loved very much.
Thank you Laura for sharing your story which I know will give people in your situation inspiration and hope.

My friend let me read this book and I am so happy that she did. The author kept me interested through the whole book. I could not put it down and when I did, I couldn't wait to get back to it. I read it in 2 days and can't wait till she writes another one. What a strong willed girl to go through all she did and be able to write and tell about it. She went through a lot some of the things she went through made me cry. You can tell she loves her daughter and was always looking out for her. What a great read and I can't wait to see if a movie is coming out. I will be sure to watch it.

Even though this book is best suited for a female audience

Even though this book is best suited for a female audience, the writer was able to draw me into the story. She was very descriptive in explaining the hardships of growing up in a large family, during and after the war, as I also was from a large family of little means. As I have spent time in Ipswich and the Suffolk countryside, I was able to relate to the area and different localities. My wife, who was mentionef in the book used to tell me of some of her experiences growing up with Laura, and this made her story very real for me. All in all, a very good read.

Writing a book about the CIA is unique challenge.� Every word in every line of the manuscript must be approved by the CIA before it can be released, even to a publisher.� The author must vet and edit his or her own work for much of the journey. It is a significant burden that can take months of back and forth approvals and disapprovals, until the skirmish is finally over.� Some publishers are afraid of taking on the CIA by producing a book that calls the actions of the Agency into question. This was especially true for From the Company of Shadows. In this book, much of my writing has exposed activities the CIA has engaged in that are embarrassing and call into question its adherence to the Constitution. Running a manuscript by the CIA for approval is like submitting a crime report to the bugler before it is filed.� It is not an easy task. So, every word that has made it into this book is precious. I am certain some of the information is like concentrated lemon juice; causing the reader to pucker a little. Restrictions of secrecy have prevented me from expanding further.

Shipp provides a stunning example of the CIA's concealment of negligence by including excerpts from his book on the subject, blacked out by CIA censors. He spent months going back and forth, line by line, word by word, negotiating with the CIA for the book's release.

He also supervised the Department of State Anti Terrorism Assistance program and managed the protective detail assigned to the president of Afghanistan following the US invasion.�

Excellent Book!

From the very beginning, Shipp paints a picture that really grabs you and pulls you into the CIA World. From the secrets we all knew existed to the abominations we never thought possible, Shipp's experience and service to our country makes for an exciting and tantalizing read. BEWARE...if you are a slow reader, you need to carve out some time to read, because once you pick this book up you won't want to put it down.

fascinating true story

This was a fascinating true story of a man's role in CIA operations; you will gain insights in the operation of the nation's top spy agency that have never before been disclosed. This story is told by someone who has been there and placed his life on the line for his country. This book could not have come at a better time with the current events unfolding in our nation and abroad. I respect Mr. Shipp as he is one of the only CIA officers in history to publicly stand up against one of the most powerful agencies in the world and survive. This is a book that you absolutely must read. It is a virtual encyclopedia of internal and external US intelligence and CIA operations.

I haven't finished the book yet but if the rest of the book is as good as where I've read so far I would give it 5 stars. Interesting to see a side of a man I know from a different perspective.
