What is a REPO? A REPO is essentially a secured loan, where collateral is sold with a price and date fixed for its re-purchase. Although in classic REPO full legal title to the collateral is transferred to the buyer, economic benefit of the collateral is retained by the seller. Thus REPO trades as a money market instrument. Repurchase agreements originated in arrangements between the US Federal Reserve Bank and the Money Market, but are now around the world. REPOs range in maturity from overnight to one year or even longer, and are an essential part of the debt capital markets. The UK government allowed gilts to be traded on the REPO market in 1996.

Timeless Principles

The review below and the nasty one-star review placed on Marcia Stigum's book recommending Mr. Choudrhy's work at the expense of Ms. Stigum's seem to suggest that she wrote the review favorably comparing her book to Mr. Choudrhy's book. Since she recently passed away, that is hardly possible, even though her book outsells this one even after her death.
It seems more appropriate to recognize that the principles of the money markets and repo and the mathematics of these markets are universal and timeless as is Marcia Stigum's work.

Identity Crisis

It is interesting that most, if not all, of the 5-star reviews below appear to be written by the author's? aliases. For instance, the Oct. 7, Oct, 20, both Oct 22 reviews, and the Nov. 4 review all currently originate from X Moore from "John Rasheed", although in the past they've all shown London or Cape Town origin as "John Rasheed" sought to cover his tracks.
"Mr. Gagan Singh" writes several negative reviews of other books, but positive reviews of Mr. Choudhry's books. "Mr. Gagan Singh" wrote negative reviews of Ms. Stigum's "The Money Market" and alternately hails from NY, the USA, Capetown or from wherever next this chameleon chooses to hail as the reviews change.
"Matthew Bartlett" is another alias used on two book reviews of Fabozzi's "Collateralized Debt Obligations" book. One of the "Matthew Bartlett" reviews is signed "Moorad Choudhry" and praises the book with 5-stars, but the other review is unsigned and gives the book a one-star review. This is a serious identity crisis.

Adequate but doesn't sell like Stigum

A one-star Amazon review of Ms. Stigum's book denigrates her work, but recommends another of Mr. Choudrhy's books, and coincidentally appeared after the negative review below, that could not possibly have come from Ms. Stigum. It seems merely retaliatory.
Ms. Stigum's work on the U.S. markets allows one to allows one to deduce the dynamics - and equips one to solve the mathematics - of the global money markets deserves high honors.
The unsportsmanlike behavior doesn't end there, since it seems that commercially successful books with titles that most closely match Mr. Choudrhy's upcoming releases have multiple one-star and two-star reviews from apparently the same reviewer and from seeming pseudonyms and free internet accounts.

Not Enough Examples

This book does not provide enough examples to thoroughly cover each chapter. The end of chapter exercises are much harder than the examples given in the chapter. This book leaves you wanting more for your money. I advise any one to not buy or use this book. I had to use other books to try and figure out how to solve the problems for homework. I am going to put this book on my bookshelf and let it gather dust, its almost totally useless.

Worst Textbook I've Ever Had

This is my senior year of college so I've had my fair share of textbooks and this one is the worst. I don't know why my class even uses this book as it's over 10 years old. The age isn't even the real problem though, the problem is there are about 2 examples for every chapter and not enough description to figure out on your own how to do some problems. I have had books like this before, but those books had solutions to selected problems at least, so you could use similar problems as examples to figure out how to do other ones, but this book doesn't have any solutions. This book throws you in the fire and tells you not to burn, not helpful at all.

Very litte content

My school uses this book to teach random signals, and I feel that the content is quite lacking. The theory presented is too basic, and the authors don't provide any further explantions. The examples presented are too simple and too few. Additionally, they don't show how harder problems can be solved. The end-of-chapter problems aren't very easy to solve if you're only consulting this book. There are exercises presented for you to try during the chapter in addition to the end-of-chapter problems, but the book doesn't show how to do these problems and only gives you the final answers instead. On top of this, sometimes, the answers for the exercises are switched, leaving you wondering for a few minutes what you might have done wrong.
As a comparision to other books, the chapter about several random variables in this book was approximately 35 pages long, while the book by Papoulis (another book I've consulted) covers this material in 70 pages. I've taken a look at some other books, and one book that comes close to my tastes is Schaum's Outline of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Processes since it provides a whole lot of examples I can work through.

Mark Harrison is a genius

This guy is such a genius in composing snippets of piano in an astounding variety of styles that are clearly evocative of the original artists work. I am a professional keyboardist and a piano hobbyist. These pieces are very challenging and rewarding.
The accompanying CD is invaluable. You can listen to just the piano or just the accompanying band. If you put the music on your smartphone or tablet you can get apps to slow it down.
Addendum: It's May 4, 2014, and I'm finishing chapter 19 of 24 chapters. Some of the pieces are very easy, like a Paul McCartney style that sounds like "Let It Be." Some of the pieces have tripped me up for weeks. I found the "Crocodile Rock" sounding Elton John style deceptively difficult. While it's true that the samples provided only superficially cover the represented artists, I am impressed with the variety of styles provided.

Good sampler

The musical examples in this book are fun to play and instructive and I have no doubt that I will gain some insight into the playing of these artists. The examples are not identified as transcribed excerpts from actual songs, but pieces composed "in the style of" or using chord voicings and left hand patterns "typical" of these artists. However, if you are familiar with their work, you won't have any trouble identifying the songs on which the pieces are based. You'll find yourself playing things that sound like Georgia on my mind, Lonely avenue, What'd I say, Bennie and the jets, Daniel, Jessica, Cantaloupe island, Maiden voyage, I guess that's why they call it the blues, This is my life, Africa, Rosanna, Who's crying now, Get back, What a fool believes, and Minute by minute. I can't tell you on which songs many of the examples are based because I am not familiar with those artist's work, and that brings me to one criticism: I think that Harrison (or publisher Hal Leonard) is stretching the meaning of the word "pop" here. I know that music is marketed differently than it was in the days when I was listening to Top-40 radio and that the lines between musical genres have become blurred, but I resist calling the work of Herbie Hancock, David Benoit, or Jeff Lorber "pop"; yes, they are popular outside of jazz and jazz fusion circles and yes, they have influenced pianists who can be considered "pop", but the word "crossover" was coined for a reason. Most of the examples in this book are jazz, smooth jazz, or contemporary R&B (smooth jazz with vocals), unsurprisingly, because those styles are clearly Harrison's forte. The blues/rock/country side of pop is underrepresented in this book and I do not find the examples of the playing of one artist representing this side, Chuck Leavell, useful or typical of his playing.
Not only are the artists in this book too diverse, but there are too many of them: can you really expect to get a "complete introduction" to the playing of 23 different musicians in 167 pages, an average of only seven pages per artist? In fact, this book feels more like a sampler than an actual attempt to give readers "a complete introduction" to the piano playing of these artists. I think the real purpose of this book is to get people to buy Harrison's other books. This impression is reinforced by the frequent reference to these books as places to learn more about particular techniques. Not that you could go wrong, studying these books, but c'mon, Hal Leonard: just call this a sampler and don't mislead people.
How one rates this book will depend on what one wants from it. If you are looking for examples of a wide range of techniques and chord voicings used by contemporary, jazz-oriented pianists and suggestions for where to learn more about them, you've come to the right place: four stars. However, If you are looking for real insight into the playing of any one of these pianists or for insight into blues, rock, or country piano styles, I would not recommend this book.
