Adventure and Courage

I purchased the Kindle version of the novella Sundae a while ago, and it recently came to the top of my list. I read it first sitting in an airport, and again almost immediately. Within a week I read it to my five year old son. Sundae is an amazing story. While parts were a bit heavy for my son, he understood the story and definitely identified with several of the characters, especially the protective bear named Sundae.

Sundae is the story of a bear--a stuffed animal--whose purpose is to protect children from the dangers that exist within the unseen world of the imagination. We follow Sundae from creation through his life, defending children and at times finding himself tucked away quietly in storage.

What I love most about this book is that it gives form to the shapeless and often nameless things that frighten children. Things known and "seen" are often much less scary than things unseen and therefore less understood. In the story we see the threats to the children with form and therefore we see Sundae's battles as a child would see them.

My son loved the story, as did I, and he still talks about it. He also had a small bear in his room he's now renamed "Sundae". The bear is never far away and he sleeps well.

If you're already familiar with Matt Wallace's other works and didn't realize he's written a children's story, don't look past Sundae. Even if you don't have kids, read this. I'm sure you'll enjoy it, it'll bring back some lost memories of childhood, and you just might know a child you can pass it to who would benefit from hearing this awesome story of adventure and courage.

Simple and amazing. I read this short story in twenty minutes and will remember it forever. I've heard this story advertised on a writing podcast I listen to and decided to purchase it as soon as I got paid. Trust me, 99 cents for a gem like this is robbery on the consumers part. I was reminded of so many stories I read as a child and the relationship between Sundae and Silver brought tears to my eyes. BUY THIS STORY and be inspired and transported. Thank you Mr. Wallace.

Dreams, Imagination, and Hope!

I'm not normally a big fan of short stories, but Sundae blew me away! Based on the subject, a teddy bear, I'd like to categorize Sundae as a young adult short story. But, it's too profound. It's not just about a teddy bear any more than Animal Farm is about farm animals. In Sundae, Matt Wallace captures the innocence and purity of youth, not, I think for children, but for adults. He reminds us that dreaming, imagination, and hope are things we must maintain at nearly any cost.

I started this audiobook a few days ago, and mid-way through disc 2 it's becoming evident that there's no way I'll make it to the end.

I honestly don't even know how to express my feelings towards the way she talks about the poor pitied people she encounters, the jobs she avoids (because she wants to slum it but not THAT much, right?) trailer trash, the jobs she takes and the "fat people hell" (WTF?). The GALL this woman has to pretend like she was truly living "the poor life" is nauseating. The book OOZES liberal elitist condescension- like I'm pretty sure she's the kind of person that would pull out the purell and wipe her hands in front of you after meeting anyone she felt was beneath her or donate to the poor- as long as she didn't actually have to, ya know, talk to them.

If you want to read about REAL LIFE just trying to make ends meet, this is a must read. I read it several years ago in one night because it gets you so involved in her day to day dialog....loaned it to someone and never got it back, so I ordered it again, and it reinforced my belief that you treat everyone good....you never know what the person behind the counter that is waiting on you is dealing with in her/his life. It really did change my thought pattern. Barbara Ehrenreich writes amazing well as she delves right into what it is to be the person doing somewhat of a thankless job. Worth your time to read if you care about others...

rich white privilege pretends to have to live off less

I found this book to be an abomination. It was sad to see that a book that has the potential to open eyes and change lives was used to show the privileged white society we live in. This book would be much better if she had approached the people and tried to get their stories rather than trying to create her own stories. You can't read that much into what she has written because she was only in each place for a month and sometimes went back home to her privileged life. The least she could have done was recognize that she is privileged in the book instead of writing as though she is better than everyone else. I was saddened to see that this is what qualifies as educational writing now a days. I do hope that if the author continues to write about a group of people she does not belong to she will think long and hard how she approaches it.

John W. Rittinghouse is Chief Software Architect and Co-founder of Hypersecurity LLC in Houston, Texas. He holds a Ph.D. in Psychology with emphasis in Natural Language Processing.

James F. Ransome is a Senior Director and the Chief Security Officer for the Cisco Collaborative Software Group (WebEx). He holds a Ph.D. in Information Systems specializing in Information Security.

Profoundly Useless...

Even for an "executive overview," this volume is exceptionally light on useful content. To make up for the book's lack of substance, the authors apparently felt compelled to include tons of filler. For example, the first thirty pages are an overview of the development of computing -- including a bunch of fuzzy, low-res B&W photos of the Eniac, the Harvard Mark I computer, an Intel 4004 chip, Tim Berners-Lee's first web server, etc. (Most of these images are either quarter- or half-page size, so they serve primarily to take up space.) Later in the book, there's a 28-page chapter explaining how to download and install Sun virtualization components; this includes step-by-step instructions and more grainy images of each panel in the installation wizard. Mixed in with all this fluff, there are a few shallow discussions of network architecture, IPV6, cloud vendors and technologies, and security. The book finishes off with a chapter on mobile computing that consists primarily of a discussion of what smartphones are (perhaps targeted at people who've been in a coma for the last decade), and the now-familiar grainy, low-res half-page images of several vendors' phones.

There are much better overview books available (Rhoton's book on cloud computing comes to mind). The real question about this book is, why was it ever published? What editor at CRC Press read the authors' draft and thought it was worth printing in quantity?

Slightly out dated. The technology changes so fast, but this book really brings you up to speed. You must be very specific regarding what open source software you choose for this book to guide you correctly.

About the Author
DENNIS PLIES has been a professor of music at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon, for more than thirty-five years. He has taught aural skills and piano, directed jazz ensembles, and taught a popular humanities course. He has had a lifelong interest in the art of teaching, and has performed regularly as a jazz artist, having written his doctoral dissertation on the pedagogy of jazz improvisation. Dr. Plies defines himself with six words: “friend, teacher, musician, writer, thinker, improviser.” He and his wife Barbara live in Portland near their four adult children.

Well written. Artfully crafted. Thought provoking. Comes with discussion questions to challenge the reader or to be used in a group setting. A challenge to live by faith, get out and improvise, and engage in productive dialogue. This book is written from a personal perspective, sharing the author's personal journey, that relates jazz to life, combining esthetics with reason and experience. Well worth the thought provoking read.

Loved this one, the series is still going strong!

This series never ceases to amaze me! I have tried a few other fairy books since reading this J.L. Bryan series and have been so not interested every time. But, when I read these I am completely lost in the fairy lore and the wonderful writing. Fairyland is an epic adventure in just that, a Fairyland. In this one we get to go with Jason and Erin as they fight their way through marshmallow swamps and the Southward sea (which is full of sharks with attitude and mermaid pirates!)

All of my favourite characters were back in full force. Grizzlemore was as grumpy and sarcastic as ever and is still reigning as my favourite. We get to watch Erin and Jason's relationship grow as they venture through fairyland which was exactly what I was looking for in this fourth installment. Some of the mystery surrounding Erin is revealed but just a touch. J.L must be longing to drive me insane with anticipation as he is constantly giving tid bits of information but always just shy of enough to fulfil me. We are also treated to more of Aiode and Liadan's adventure to retrieve the stolen instruments. Aiode still had me laughing in this one as she figured out the inner workings of the man world and was exposed to rock n' roll.

For the fourth book in this series I will admit that I had worried about it being carried on and how it could be kept fresh and exciting. J.L. accomplished that, I've mentioned how fascinated I am with this authors imagination before and this one just pushed it even farther, there are so many new creations in Faerie; Sourgum & Sweetgum trees that spit gum as far as the eye can see, giant pork loving bog frogs and vicious swamp cobras made everything feel brand new. There is also a little twist in this one that, once it hit me like a slap in the face, I was kicking myself for not suspecting it because it makes so much sense.

I can't say enough about this series, you have to read them for yourself. They are fantastical, hilarious and written so well. This is a great addition to a series that I love and I can't wait for more!

Keeps getting better

Not sure how this author maintains the level of intrigue and excitement all the way into the fourth book, but somehow he does. I bought the first book and couldn't put it down. Then I immediately had to have the second book and couldn't put THAT one down. It was a domino effect until I finished the fourth book. Now I'm impatiently waiting for the fifth book. These books would make a great show or movie.

So, if you've read my previous reviews of books one, two and three of the Songs of Magic Series by J.L. Bryan then you know just how much I love this series! And guess what...book four, Fairyland, is my absolute favorite so far! Which means this book is awesometastic and fantabulous!

Picking up right where book three leaves off, Fairyland finds Erin and Jason in (wait for it)...fairyland! The evil dullahan has taken Katie into Faerie and Erin, Jason and Grizlemor go after them and find themselves up against strange and dangerous obstacles in this fantastical world. After making a deal with some clurichauns the three must go on a mission across fairy land in order to retrieve a special bug in exchange for Katie's freedom. Meanwhile, in L.A. Mitch and Dred must prepare for a concert without half the Rioting Zebras, with Aoide and Liadan hot on their trail and just a little peeved. And everybody encounters some unexpected surprises.

Author J.L. Bryan really rocked this one! Packed full of fantastical adventure, jamming music, electric romance, awesome characters and superb world-building, Fairyland is the perfect mix of fun, fantasy, humor and excitement.

There's quite a bit going on in this book, in both Faerie and man-world, but the story flows effortlessly and seamlessly. Bryan continues to bring an absolute wonderful and fresh sense of humor to every page. I love how laugh out loud funny these books are, without ever being cheesy or over the top. And the story is hip and current, while at the same time appealing to all ages.

I was so excited to explore the world of Faerie with Erin and Jason and I'm completely in love with this world! Bryan has created a very eclectic Wonderland meets Narnia kind of world that dazzles and sparkles with fantastical originality. This fairy world is as enchanting as it dangerous and as beautiful as it is forbidding, with frogs the size of mountains, volcanoes that spew jewels, clever pixies, hungry loan sharks (of the oceanic type), hippie mermaid thieves, rivers of chocolate and peanut butter cup flowers, oh my!

I loved journeying with Erin and Jason through Faerie, but Dred and Mitch's run-in with Aoide and Liadan is as equally entertaining. I'm still Dred's #1 fan and have a huge crush on this feisty gal! Aoide continues to fall in love with man-made music and there's a lot of awesome music appreciation in this book, from Ella Fitzgerald to Buddy Holly to Led Zeppelin...for those about to rock, this book salutes you ;)

The love sparks continue to fly between Erin and Jason and there's even some long awaited smoochin'. I really love these two together and how natural their relationship has progressed. I've said it before, but it bears repeating, this is a romance that readers will believe in and be invested in completely! There's also some long awaited exploration of Erin's mysterious, otherworldly specialness...I won't spoil it for you, but I'm totally loving the direction this part of the story is taking.

The book concludes with a little mystery and suspense and excitedly sets up the fifth book and I cannot wait to read the next book!

MY FINAL THOUGHTS: This series continues to captivate and enchant with its humor, thrills and wonderful characters and settings, and Fairyland hums with awesomeness. A MUST read book and series!

This innovative work of historical sociology locates the origins of modern democratic discourse in the emergent culture of printing in early modern England. For David Zaret, the key to the rise of a democratic public sphere was the impact of this culture of printing on the secrecy and privilege that shrouded political decisions in seventeenth-century England. Zaret explores the unanticipated liberating effects of printing and printed communication in transforming the world of political secrecy into a culture of open discourse and eventually a politics of public opinion.

Contrary to those who locate the origins of the public sphere in the philosophical tracts of the French Enlightenment, Zaret claims that it originated as a practical accomplishment, propelled by economic and technical aspects of printing--in particular heightened commercialism and increased capacity to produce texts. Zaret writes that this accomplishment gained impetus when competing elites--Royalists and Parliamentarians, Presbyterians and Independents--used printed material to reach the masses, whose leaders in turn invoked the authority of public opinion to lobby those elites.

Zaret further shows how the earlier traditions of communication in England, from ballads and broadsides to inn and alehouse conversation, merged with the new culture of print to upset prevailing norms of secrecy and privilege. He points as well to the paradox for today's critics, who attribute the impoverishment of the public sphere to the very technological and economic forces that brought about the means of democratic discourse in the first place.
