Psychiatry, by Janis Cutler, Eric Marcus

Designed specifically for medical students, as well as other trainees in the health professions, including social workers, occupational therapists, and psychiatric residents, Psychiatry 2e is a dynamic introductory textbook in psychiatry. Ideally suited for first and second year medical students during their psychopathology course and third year medical students during their psychiatry clerkship, the material, including extensive tables, is presented in a clear, concise and practical manner perfect for exam preparation. The authors provide a thorough yet concise introduction to clinical psychiatry, focusing on basic clinical skills like recognition and assessment of psychiatric illness. Clinically relevant information is emphasized, including practical interviewing techniques.

Psychiatry 2e also uses case studies, DSM-IV guidelines, and extensive tables offset from the text to act as a comprehensive yet concise guide for the busy medical student studying for exams. In addition, the second edition includes a new chapter devoted to child and adolescent psychiatry and the authors have expanded their coverage of cultural and geriatric issues in psychiatry. A broader discussion of the psychotherapies is also included, in recognition of the increasing role that cognitive behavior therapy plays in the treatment of many psychiatric conditions. Written by two well-known Columbia University Professors who direct medical student education in psychiatry, the tone is balanced and practical, perfect for the medical student not specializing in psychiatry.

Review
"An appealing introductory text...Very strong psychopathology chapters...The authors are experienced and wise clinicians with excellent reputations...I would hope the authors would include a broader vision of developmental theory and psychotherapeutic interventions than they did in the first edition." --Deborah Spitz, MD, Education Mission Director, Director of Residency Training, Dept of Psychiatry, University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine

"I would agree with the edtiors that one of the key changes should be a new or significantly revised chapter on child psychiatry...I don't agree with the editors' plan to put the new child psychaitry material in the Life Development chapter, [however]. Life development...belongs in the first section...[The book is] a solid competitor." --Gordon Strauss, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Louisville School of Medicine

"In truth, there is much to like in this text; specifically, some of the individual chapters (eg, mood disorder, psychosis, anxiety) are planned and executed well. The book really shines when it comes to point out how to interview for specific situations (depression, suicidal ideas)." --James Morrison, MD, Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Oregon Health and Science University

Dynamic Psychiatry Introductory Text
By Joseph P. Merlino
I was fortunate to receive a review copy of Psychiatry and have been reading it like a novel ever since. It is indeed "dynamic" making a dynamic understanding of the patient central to the clinician's assessment and evaluation. For trainees, and practitioners needing a refresher or introduction to the dynamic aspects of illness, this text is a treat. In this era of patient-centered care, wellness and recovery, Psychiatry offers hope that our field can embrace these principles and still be cutting edge.

Who exactly do energy vampires and negative people affect?

Simple … Everybody!

So what is an energy vampire? You’ve probably heard the term “energy vampires” before, especially if you’re at all interested in psychic ability or psychic development. But what exactly are energy vampires? They’re not real vampires. Well, I guess they’re real vampires, but not like the ones you see in Twilight … “Energy vampires” feed upon your energy. In other words, their primary target is your spiritual body, not your physical body.

“Energy vampires” are people who constantly draw upon other people’s energy in order to help “recharge” their own system.

So what do energy vampires and negative people have in common?
They essentially do the same thing. They draw upon your energy, and they will have a very profound effect on your system, both spiritually and physically. Many times, they will wear you down to the point of exhaustion. However, unless you’re aware of what is happening, you may not even notice the effects these people are having in your life, on a day-to-day basis.

Empaths, this is the book for you!

Empaths are very susceptible to “energy vampires” more so than most other people. More and more people are discovering they are empaths in this new consciousness area. You may even be one and never knew it, until now. How do you find out if you are an empath? By reading this book!

In The Book Find Out:

•How to spot an “energy vampire”
•What to do if you if you are surrounded by negative people
•How to tell if you are an empath!
•What effects “energy vampires” have on your spiritual and physical health
•How to live in a world filled with “energy vampires”
•And the very important…energy vampire first aid!

Wonderful Read
By Spiritual Seeker
Just read Jennifer O'Neill's book ENERGY VAMPIRES Kindle edition. It was a wonderful read with lots of suggestions on how to deal with the difficult people in your life who sap you of energy and leave you exhausted. The book is structured in a way that answers all your questions and builds upon the last chapter. It flows and is an easy read. By the time you finish the book you will have the knowledge and tools to spot and deal with the energy vampires and negative people in your life. Also included are several exercises you do as Jennifer guides you, These exercises demonstrate her teachings. Included in the book are also 2 bonus chapters that contain amazing true stories and examples. I highly recommend reading this book.

Seems to be promoting being a fair weather friend
By Lavender Murray
First of all, I would say that there are books from this author that I love. I LOVED 18 Secrets to Manifestation a LOT. That is an EXCELLENT book by this author that I would recommend. But I don't like this because because it says that if you have a problem with your friends and family, you should spend less time with them or leave them. Of which, could make you a fair weather friend. People have highs and lows in their lives. Everybody has a low period. Sure, I agree that you should leave when the negativity is constantly aimed TO YOU. But there is a missing step that Doreen Virtue points out in her book How To Be Assertive For Earth Angels. The missing step is actually TELLING people how you feel. To tell your friend, "When you crack jokes about my weight, it hurts my feelings and I ask that you cease and desist or I'm afraid that I'm going to have to let you go." Because TRUST me, when you are spending less and less time with a person, they KNOW that there is something wrong in the relationship. And you may be hurting yourself the most. How many people would visit you in the hospital? How many people would allow you to stay with them if you're sick? How many people would help you out when you need it?

You may want to ask yourself the above questions before distances yourself from a person. People are NOT mindreadings. And this is the behavior that I HATED in my high school years, people had a problem, but I'm not a mindreader. I have no idea what the problem is. I would've been a lot more happy if they were to tell me. And that's what I know about people. Many people do what you to tell them. Just kindly. "When you do [blank] it bothers me, please stop. If you continue, I'm going to have to cut you lose." To me, it's just a way of being passive aggressive. You're punishing people for not acting the way you want them to act by distancing yourself from them. Huge problem is, she skip the step where you tell people how you feel. Because as far as you know, they would probably work on it or even stop if you have tried telling them. And if you have a problem, if all you do is wait it out or leave. Then, you would Never be truly close to people. We may be able to read minds in the spiritual world, but we can't in the physical world. The only thing I and most people would understand is that your distancing yourself and that you're unhappy in the relationship. But what I can't and what most people won't be able to understand is why. If you kick people out or distance yourself and you don't say way, then you are damaging what could be a very satisfying relationship. Because when I tell people how I feel, the good ones go, "I am SO SORRY. I had NO IDEA that, that bothered you. Thank you for telling me. You're a good person." The bad ones would tell me that I'm being too sensitive, so then I cut them out. But I tell them how I feel, first. So, they have that wonderful opportunity to help make the relationship work. Because I can't get a relationship to work all by myself.

Again, it's simple. "When you do [blank] it bothers me, if you continue, then I'm going to have to let you go." Or a simpler, "When you do [blank] it bothers me. Please stop." And you could add, "I'm going to have to let you go." afterwards. But to give the relationship a chance to survive. If you are looking for a book that addresses the same issues but more in depth, again that would be How To Be Assertive for Earth Angels. It addresses the exact same issues of how to deal with negative people. And she does agree and I agree what you should leave a relationship that's too negative.

Quick read- but lots of great information!
By Sue R. Fernandez
I highly recommend this book, and I worry that people who are more "traditional" thinkers will pass it up. Jennifer has great questions to determine if you are an empath, or if you are sensitive to the energy around you. I know I am, but didn't have the words to describe it...she does a fantastic job at this, and makes you realize it's normal. Better still...in easy terms, she gives you the tools to protect yourself from letting others drain everything you have. The tools she provides in this quick, easy read are easy to do, realistic for our busy lives, and I believe they could help many people.

Mastering CMake, by Ken Martin, Bill Hoffman

CMake is an open-source build tool enabling collaboration among software developers working on distinct platforms by using a common build specification to drive their native build tools. Mastering CMake explains how to use the CMake suite of tools, including CTest and CPack, to develop, build, test, and package software for distribution. It covers use of the command-line and GUI tools on Linux (UNIX), Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X. This book also contains a guide for converting projects to CMake and writing CMake code to specify build rules to compile sources, create static and shared libraries, link executables, run custom commands, run tests, and install artifacts. It also includes a copy of key portions of the official reference documentation.

Not better than the online documentation
By Nikolaus Rath
I bought this book in the hope of getting a structured introduction to CMake. While the CMake online documentation appears to be comprehensive, it seems mostly intended as a reference and is thus rather difficult to use as a starting point, so I was hoping this book would provide more guidance. Unfortunately this is not what the book delivers.

While it comes in with 685 pages, the appendix starts at page 235 and from there on all you get is a printed version of the CMake manpages.

Furthermore, even the first 235 are low quality in almost every aspect. The illustrations are badly prepared and mostl pixelated and too big in comparison to the text. The text has not been proofread properly ("CMake is no longer case insensitive, so where you see COMMAND you could use command"). The contents are not structured nor particularly suited for learning CMake (why would I care about the class hierarchy of the CMake implementation?). Not even the syntax of the CMakeLists file is explained completely, e.g. the difference between whitespace and semicolors in variable definitions is unclear, and there seems to be a rather fuzzy distinction between "expanding" and "replacing" variables.

If you're looking for a printed copy of the onilne documentation this book may be what you're looking for. Otherwise skip it.

Poorly organized and overpriced
By flyboy
Yes, it is helping me learn some things about CMake. But for fifty bucks I expected better than this.

For the first few chapters I felt like I must be stupid or something. I'd follow along fine for a while then have to stop and back up just to sort out what was being presented. Then I got to this section about the installation command, and I realized it's not me, it's the dang book. It's not a particularly difficult command, but I had to read the first two pages about four times before I figured out how to parse what they were presenting. The section starts with 2-3 line summaries of the command's various signatures, then in the middle of the last one it launches into a description of the keywords that apply to all signatures, without even a paragraph break. Then suddenly it starts over with more complete descriptions of each signature -- no subhead or anything constituting a separation of the the summaries, keywords or expanded descriptions from each other. Just the most egregious example I can think of but there are others. The book is also poorly proofread, with a lot of distracting typos and missing words which wouldn't be a big a deal but again for a $50 book, I would expect better.

And as a previous reviewer mentioned, the bulk of the book is reference material that duplicates what can be found on the internet in a more up-to-date and easier to access form than in a big fat heavy book. They should have just printed the first 234 pages and sold it for 20 bucks.

Highly recommended
By Colin MacKenzie
I'm not sure why this book is getting bad reviews. I loved the book. I was a beginner at cmake but advanced c/c++ programmer when I bought the book. I was using the online reference (which is great), but the book allows me to just fan through the pages. I read it while waiting on progress bars, or in my "white oval office" where I do most of my reading free from distraction. For me reading online or digital just isnt the same. So it's your call, if reading from a computer screen is your thing than skip the book...otherwise don't let all the negative reviews bother you. I also found the book more practically written with "use cases" where the online docs are "programmer reference".

P.S. I am a total convert, cmake is awesome!
