Amazing book for a young person
By ALLENthusiasm247
I recently sat down with my grandmother and asked her what college was like for her. She explained to me that she was a Home Economics major, which surprised me. I asked her what she learned and I must admit that I was jealous of her knowledge. I began a hunt for classic home economics books that may have been used in one of her classes. After a long search, I discovered that this little book perfectly represents everything that traditional home economics books taught. It is a beautiful compilation of classic concepts that many young people need to learn. As a college student, I love this book because it teaches me everything that I never learned. I would recommend this for young adults that want to learn all of the little things that no one ever taught us.

Home Economics:Vintage Advice and Practical Science for the 21st-Century Household
By rist
I loved this book! I am a stay at home Mom with an attraction for domestic bliss. I skipped over the cooking section of this book as any older cook book can teach the reader how to make bread, etc.. What I needed help with was cleaning. I hate cleaning but love a clean house. I found the advice to be very complete and pointed out areas of cleaning that I had never thought of before. I found the overall advise of the book to be thorough and fun. Homemaking is my job and my vocation, I want to do a good job and to be joyful about it. I found this book to be very helpful.

Home Ec Revisited!!!
By skyfly
This book includes all that our children are missing at school - and even at home - unfortunately in this day and age, homes are not run as they used to be. Home Economics is a thing of the past. Sure there are a handful of classes and parents that teach a few skills - but, this has a little of everything. Great tool for me as a mom to use to guide my daughter and son with the proper tools (that I may have forgotten to mention) for their future. I bought an extra one and plan on getting more as gifts! These would make great gifts for graduates, brides etc.

Review
"Anyone with Eye-Related problems needs this book. Dr. Kondrot talks to us in an easy-to-understand language, gives us many ways to help keep our eyes healthy, and discusses the medical ramifications of macular degeneration simply and in a straight forward manner. It is a joy to have a medical doctor finally embracing the many alternative medicine 'tools' that are out there today in an intelligent manner - and from experience." -- Eileen Naumann, Author of Homeopathy 911

"I just read "Healing the Eye the Natural Way", and it is terrific. The book is organized, factual, and simple yet thoroughly explained with great examples to clarify complex ideas about macular degeneration."

"This is a very practical guide that patients can use to evaluate their condition, make choices and initiate a reasonable program for themselves. Hope reigns eternal, and hats off to you for explaining why it should, on a mind, body and spiritual level that emphasizes self empowerment." (Dahlia Hirsch, MD (Ophthalmologist and Wholistic Doctor)) -- Dahlia Hirsch, MD (Ophthalmologist and Wholistic Doctor)

"When my husband found out that he had Stargardt Macular Degeneration, we were told by our doctor that there was nothing we could do but go home and wait for blindness to set in. I tried to stay positive and searched the Internet for cure. I found some interesting facts and herbs but no real cure. Finally, by the grace of God, I discvered your practice. Without you we would be preparing for a seeing eye dog, Braille lessons, and other life altering changes." -- Robin Buchman, Patient's Wife

From the Author
Why another book dealing with alternative medicine and vision problems?? I felt there was a need for a book that goes beyond nutrition, vitamin and mineral thgerapy for the treatment of macular degeneration. Over 20 years of practice have convinced me that there are alternative therapies that can be of great value in the treatment of this disabling condition. I want to share with the reader important information regarding vision therapy, homeopathy, chelation and micro-current stimulation that can change the life and sight of many people.

About the Author
Dr. Kondrot is a medical ophthalmologist who has been in practice for over 20 years in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Since 1988, when he was introduced to the science of Homeopathy, he has become an avid student of classical homeopathy receiving his diploma from the Hahnemann Medical College. In fact, at this time, he is the only ophthalmologist in the country who specializes in Classical Homeopathy. Due to his genuine interest in helping people with degenerative eye disorders, he has developed a comprehensive protocol to guide us not only for healthy eyesight but also a healthier life. He has spent a number of years researching and using various natural therapies to help his patients with Age Related Macular Degeneration restore their sight, or at least arrest the progress of this disorder which may lead to severe visual impairment.

You can heal your eyes
By Shirley A Henrickson
So many people are going blind because they never search for answers. They just take their doctors word for it that nothing can be done. Dr. Kondrot proves them wrong. I proved them wrong. My near vision correction was 2.75, I have done everything Dr. Kondrot says to do. I no longer wear glasses, except to read, my near vision correction is now 1.25. I wish everyone with age related macular degeneration like I have would read his book and follow his advice. I did, I saw Gail Brent, Lac at the Health and Vision Acupuncture Center in San Diego, Ca. for micro-acupuncture for macular degeneration. Gail Brent did more than heal my eyes, I left feeling like a better person. She is a very caring, compassionate healer.

Algorithms to Live By: The Computer Science of Human Decisions, by Brian Christian, Tom Griffiths

A fascinating exploration of how computer algorithms can be applied to our everyday lives, helping to solve common decision-making problems and illuminate the workings of the human mind

All our lives are constrained by limited space and time, limits that give rise to a particular set of problems. What should we do, or leave undone, in a day or a lifetime? How much messiness should we accept? What balance of new activities and familiar favorites is the most fulfilling? These may seem like uniquely human quandaries, but they are not: computers, too, face the same constraints, so computer scientists have been grappling with their version of such problems for decades. And the solutions they've found have much to teach us.

In a dazzlingly interdisciplinary work, acclaimed author Brian Christian and cognitive scientist Tom Griffiths show how the simple, precise algorithms used by computers can also untangle very human questions. They explain how to have better hunches and when to leave things to chance, how to deal with overwhelming choices and how best to connect with others. From finding a spouse to finding a parking spot, from organizing one's inbox to understanding the workings of human memory, Algorithms to Live By transforms the wisdom of computer science into strategies for human living.

Great book, disagreed with a few points, overall awesome
By Shiri Dori-Hacohen
[The original title of this review was: "Great book, though a few inaccuracies & bold claims". See below for two updates on the review and why I changed the title.]

I'm a little over halfway with this recently published book, which I'm really enjoying so far - and I expect to enjoy it all the way to the end. A lot of great and unexpected insights here, and it seems that the authors did a good job explaining extremely complex algorithms and showing their applicability to real life (though it's hard for me to tell how good their explanations are to a novice, since I'm an expert in the field - I have two masters in Computer Science and working on my PhD, and was familiar with 90% of the algorithms described before opening the book).

My biggest quibble with this book (and the reason they lost a star) is that I noticed a few annoying/sloppy inaccuracies, which makes [made! - see below for updates] me ever so slightly doubt the accuracy and veracity of other areas of the book that I'm less familiar with. The other issue is the boldness of their (otherwise very interesting) conjectures.

For example, the authors misunderstand and misquote the 2-minute rule from David Allen's Getting Things Done, claiming the rule tells you to perform any less than 2-min task immediately when it occurs to you - and essentially simplifying the entire GTD system into the 2-min rule, which is in fact a tiny part of GTD (pg. 105-106). In fact, however, Allen does not suggest that at all - that would distract you from whatever you're currently engaged with, i.e. require a context switch (the costs of which the authors discuss at length). Instead, you should write that task down and add it to your intray, just like any other task. The 2-minute rule is applied later, while clearing your intray (which can be anytime in the next 48 hours). The point of the 2-minute rule is that the time spent on adding this task into your otherwise-extremely-flexible GTD system, and then tracking it in said system, would take longer than two minutes. This type of tracking is akin to what the authors refer to as "meta-work", and thus performing the 2-min task at inbox clearing time saves you an equal or greater amount of meta-work later. This is completely in line with the type of scheduling suggestions that the authors discuss. I'm not familiar with the other popular advice books the authors quote in the scheduling chapter or in the others chapters (e.g. the empty-your-closet type books they discuss in chapter 4), so I don't know if there are other such mischaracterizations, but it makes me suspect there might be. And I get that they're trying to differentiate their own advice from "all the other pop books out there", but if they're going to explicitly cite other books, they should try not to misrepresent them.

Also, when discussing the Gittins rule and the multi-armed bandit problem, they say that a machine with a 0-0 record has "a Gittins index of 0.7029. In other words, something you have no experience with whatsoever is more attractive than a machine that you know pays out seven times out of ten!" (pg. 40). However, their own table on the same page clearly shows that a machine with a 7-3 record has a Gittins index of 0.7187, making such a machine ever so slightly superior to a 0-0 one. After some more reading I realized that what they meant was that a machine with a 0-0 record and *uncertainty* is better than a *certain payout* of 70% (i.e. guaranteed to payout 7 out of 10), but that was not what the text implied.

To be clear, these inaccuracies in and of themselves aren't huge - but they planted a seed of doubt in my mind [which is not as big anymore - see below] as to whether there were other such misrepresentations or inaccuracies in the book that I simply hadn't caught, and detracted from my enjoyment of the book.

The other concern I have with this book is that several chapters end with provocative suggestions that aren't actually empirically-backed. These conjectures are cool, but I'd have liked to see scientists be more careful about making such bold claims, or at least couching them in the need for more research to establish whether they were entirely true. One example here was the discussion about the decline of aging supposedly being a result of simply having a larger history to remember (pgs 103-104). This is a fascinating conjecture, and one that deserves to be studied properly, but they are basing it on some research work that was not age-related. I suspect the authors may be on to something, at least in the context of "normal aging" cognitive decline as opposed to, say, alzheimer-related decline. However, as stated in the text, the conjectures are stated a bit too strongly for my tastes ("But as you age, and begin to experience these sporadic latencies, take heart: the length of the delay is partly an indicator of the extent of your experience.", pg 104). I'd hate to see anyone making decisions based on them - potentially missing an earlier diagnosis, say, of alzheimer's, because the authors claimed that cognitive decline is totally normal.

Quibbles and concerns notwithstanding, I'm definitely enjoying the book and I think it's a great addition to the new genre of what's being called by some "science-help". It's also a good read for people who are tired of the same-old, and thirsty for some advice that's off the beaten path.

UPDATE:
The rest of the book was as good as I expected.
Additionally, I sent this review to the lead author (Brian Christian) in case he wanted to address these issues. I was delighted to receive a very thoughtful response from him! They will be fixing the Gittens rule description in the paperback edition, to make it clearer to the reader. The author respectfully disagreed with me on the other two issues (GTD 2 minute rule & cognitive decline).
Given what I saw in the email, I'd say the intentions behind the book definitely merit 5 stars (even though I still disagree on their presentation of those two topics). However, I'll leave the original title & rating of 4 stars as it stands for the original hardcover edition, and for consistency's sake. As I originally said, the book stands as an excellent addition to the genre, and also likely as a great first exposure into Computer Science if you've never had any.

2nd update:
Apparently, this review is now listed as the top most helpful review on Amazon (cool!). The book has been so successful that the first author (Brian Christian) recently informed me that the book is now on its third printing, which means that the Gittins index issue mentioned above is now fixed in the current and future editions. As for the other issues I had, they are more subjective in nature, and not large enough in and of themselves to merit the original (harsher) title of the review. Again, for completeness' sake and to avoid rewriting history, I leave the original review as its stands and the original title is listed below the new title, with only a few comments in brackets leading readers to these updates in the bottom.

A superior guide to the science of living well
By Ed R
The most thoughtful and meaningful book I have read since Daniel Kahneman’s “Thinking Fast and Slow”. It extends that work by detailing the extensive computer science research that has been done which illuminates those techniques (i.e., algorithms) that support our brain’s natural capabilities in order to make the best possible life decisions. It shows when it pays to be precise and rigorous and when the best choices can be made by less stringent analyses. And where “winging it” or ‘using gut feelings’ may indeed produce the best results. The authors accomplish these valuable lessons through clear explanatory writing, pertinent examples drawn from both computer design and the real (human) world and a fine sense of humor.
In addition to wonderfully fulfilling its stated goal the book also provides the reader with a solid overview of the current state of computer design and architecture and some strong validations of the received wisdom that has come to us from philosophy and religion.

Great book on real world problems solved by computer science
By Michael S.
Despite being an East-coaster, I'm a member of the Long Now Foundation, which--when I'm asked to describe it--I usually say is like TED, but with a long term view and way better substance. The Long Now gives regular talks, and then puts those talks up in video and audio form for others, who couldn't be in attendance. I subscribe to the podcast in iTunes, and listen to it--along with other podcasts--on my way to and from work.
A few months ago, Brian Christian was the guest speaker, and gave a talk centered around the subject matter of his latest book: Algorithms to Live By. The talk was fascinating, and contained a nice mixture of computer science, statistics, and humor to win the crowd over, and Christian managed to do so without coming across as too "pop science."

I purchased the book that same week, and between juggling work responsibilities and twins, managed to carve out about an hour each night to read through it. There were chapters that held my interest, and chapters that didn't, but overall the book was a fantastic mix of how various computer science problems are also real work problems, and algorithms that solve one can be applied to the other as well.

The first thing that catches you in the book is the discussion of optimal stopping, and how given a decision that needs to be made, you should begin making your choice after 37% of the options have been mulled over, assuming any of the next decisions/options are better than the ones that came before. This is illustrated with the secretary problem, and you can see why the authors led with this example not just in the book, but also in the Long Now talk. It seems both crazy and fascinating to have a difficult decision boiled down to such a hard percentage. The authors then go over different variations of the problem, and show how slight alteration can bring the best outcome.

The authors (Christian and Tom Griffiths) then follow this up with a rapid succession of entertaining problems such as exploit/explore to determine whether you should go with something that you know, or try something new, as well as chapters on sorting, caching, and scheduling, giving messy desk people hope by showing that a stack of files on a desk where something searched for is retrieved and then placed on top of the pile will eventually result in the most optimized sorting methodology for the job, and reminding older, forgetful people that accumulation of knowledge can result in greater time to sift and retrieve that information, renaming so-called brain farts to caching misses.

The chapter on Bayes' rule is where things start to get a little bogged down, but only in the beginning. Eventually, the chapter turns into an explanation on forecasting, showing which various predictive methodologies should be used for which various distributions--even equating the Erlang distribution to politics.

The back half of the book isn't as tight or as entertaining as the parts that came before it, but overfitting was a great read to be perusing while Nate Silver was being hammered for his polling methodology in the most recent election, and the chapter on networking gave a great, easy-to-read introduction to how information networks differ from telephony. The authors then conclude the book with game theory, discussing the tragedy of the commons, and how, as a society, we could pursue better options in order to ensure mass participation in important initiatives.
As somebody who studies and works in computer science and mathematics, I can say that casual readers will likely get lost in some sections, but powering through or re-reading will get you on to the more entertaining sections. This is a great book that works as a science popularizer without injecting fluffy prose/concepts or dumbing the material down.

Big Data Made Easy: A Working Guide to the Complete Hadoop Toolset, by Michael Frampton

Many corporations are finding that the size of their data sets are outgrowing the capability of their systems to store and process them. The data is becoming too big to manage and use with traditional tools. The solution: implementing a big data system.

As Big Data Made Easy: A Working Guide to the Complete Hadoop Toolset shows, Apache Hadoop offers a scalable, fault-tolerant system for storing and processing data in parallel. It has a very rich toolset that allows for storage (Hadoop), configuration (YARN and ZooKeeper), collection (Nutch and Solr), processing (Storm, Pig, and Map Reduce), scheduling (Oozie), moving (Sqoop and Avro), monitoring (Chukwa, Ambari, and Hue), testing (Big Top), and analysis (Hive).

The problem is that the Internet offers IT pros wading into big data many versions of the truth and some outright falsehoods born of ignorance. What is needed is a book just like this one: a wide-ranging but easily understood set of instructions to explain where to get Hadoop tools, what they can do, how to install them, how to configure them, how to integrate them, and how to use them successfully. And you need an expert who has worked in this area for a decade—someone just like author and big data expert Mike Frampton.

Big Data Made Easy approaches the problem of managing massive data sets from a systems perspective, and it explains the roles for each project (like architect and tester, for example) and shows how the Hadoop toolset can be used at each system stage. It explains, in an easily understood manner and through numerous examples, how to use each tool. The book also explains the sliding scale of tools available depending upon data size and when and how to use them. Big Data Made Easy shows developers and architects, as well as testers and project managers, how to:

  • Store big data
  • Configure big data
  • Process big data
  • Schedule processes
  • Move data among SQL and NoSQL systems
  • Monitor data
  • Perform big data analytics
  • Report on big data processes and projects
  • Test big data systems

Big Data Made Easy also explains the best part, which is that this toolset is free. Anyone can download it and—with the help of this book—start to use it within a day. With the skills this book will teach you under your belt, you will add value to your company or client immediately, not to mention your career.

An easy way to learn big Data via Hadoop and it tools
By Ian Stirk
Hi,

I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

This book sets out to be "A Working Guide to the Complete Hadoop Toolset" and is both wide ranging in content, and practical in its approach. Michael Frampton assumes some knowledge of Linux and SQL (but only a little), and no knowledge of Hadoop or its tools.

There is a step by step approach to tool download, installation, execution, and error checking. The following areas of functionality and associated tools are covered:

*Hadoop installation (version 1 and version 2)
*Web-based data collection (Nutch, Solr, Gora, HBase)
*Map Reduce programming (Java, Pig, Perl, Hive)
*Scheduling (Fair and Capacity schedulers, Oozie)
*Moving data (Hadoop commands, Sqoop, Flume, Storm)
*Monitoring (Hue, Nagios, Ganglia)
*Hadoop cluster management (Ambari, CDH)
*Analysis with SQL (Impala, Hive, Spark)
*ETL (Pentaho, Talend)
*Reporting (Splunk, Talend)

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1: The Problem with Data
This chapter opens with a review of what big data is – data that can’t be stored and processed in the required timeframe using traditional methods (e.g. relational databases). It is typically defined in terms of the 3Vs (i.e. volume, velocity and variety).

Various attributes of big data are discussed, including: massive scalability, commodity and cost-effective hardware, ability to recover from hardware failure, and parallel processing.

Increasing amounts of data are being created and stored. Big data processing typically starts with high terabyte amounts of data, however big data can also be applicable to smaller systems which grow. Examples of high volume data generators are given, including the Large Hadron Collider which produces 15PB of detector data per year. The chapter ends with an overview of the rest of the book.

This is a useful opening chapter, defining what big data is, its attributes, and the problems it solves. It helpfully explains the book’s practical approach i.e. introduce a tool, show how to obtain it, how to install it, and show example usage. There’s a very useful overview of each subsequent chapter.
.
.
.
Conclusion

This book provides a broad and practical introduction to big data, using Hadoop and its many tools. It gives comprehensive step by step instructions on how to download, install, configure, and run the various tools - additionally, common errors are explained and solutions proposed.

The book is easy to read, with helpful explanations, screenshots, listings, outputs, and a logical flow between the sections and chapters. There are good links between the chapters, and to websites containing further information. It also steps back and puts what’s being discussed into the larger context of big data. The book will certainly give you more confidence in the topic.

It should be noted that there is much more information available on all the tools discussed, however this book is a great starting point, and it does an excellent job of introducing the many tools in an easily understandable manner. This is perhaps the book to read before the more specific or advanced books (e.g. “Hadoop: The Definitive Reference” - the new edition of which is out in April 2015, look out for its review soon.)

If I have one concern, it relates to who will use the whole book. This book contains both admin and development sections, however large companies typically separate out their admin and development teams.

If you want a useful working introduction and overview of the current state of big data, Hadoop and its associated tools, I can highly recommend this very instructive book.

Light at the End of the Tunnel: A Survival Plan for the Human Species, by Paul Hellyer

This book reflects the mature judgment of an author with broad experience in and out of public life. It sets out in stark and unvarnished terms most of the world's major problems. The Human Species is hell bent for extinction unless we change our attitudes and actions with an urgency appropriate to impending disaster. Paul Hellyer suggests that we have about ten years to wean ourselves from the oil economy and profoundly regrets that the Copenhagen Conference reflected little progress in that direction. The whole atmosphere was one that reminded him of Emperor Nero fiddling while Rome burned. World leaders simply have to do better! The book outlines the three monumental changes required to accommodate the miracle. First, the book claims that exotic energy sources already exist. They have been developed by the U.S. "shadow government" at the massive underground "black operation" installations in Nevada and Arizona using technology borrowed from visitors from other planets. Yet they remain secret for the alleged benefit of the privileged few. Second, the money has to be found to subsidize poor nations and facilitate major changes. This can be accomplished by a fundamental re-working of the monetary and banking system. Bank leverages must be dramatically reduced and the percentage of virtual money they create as debt strictly limited so that governments can gain the financial flexibility to finance the transition to sustainability. Finally it will be necessary for all countries, races, faiths and colors to drop their antagonisms and work together in common purpose to save the heritage they have in common. -- · -- "Paul Hellyer's story is an important contribution to the literature of modern western civilization. His experience in government, his interest in exopolitics and the issues of sustainability of civilization are significant areas of current discourse." Edgar Mitchell, Sc.D, Apollo 14 Astronaut

About the Author
Paul Hellyer is one of Canada's best known and most controversial politicians. First elected in 1949, he was the youngest cabinet minister appointed to Louis S. St. Laurent's government eight years later. He subsequently held senior posts in the governments of Lester B. Pearson and Pierre E. Trudeau, who defeated him for the Liberal Party leadership in 1968. The following year, after achieving the rank of senior minister, which was later designated Deputy Prime Minister, Hellyer resigned from the Trudeau cabinet on a question of principle related to housing. Although Hellyer is best known for the unification of the Canadian Armed Forces and for his 1968 chairmanship of the Task Force on Housing and Urban Development, he has maintained a life-long interest in macroeconomics. Through the years, as a journalist and political commentator, he has continued to fight for economic reforms and has written several books on the subject. A man of many interests, Hellyer's ideas are not classroom abstractions. He was born and raised on a farm and his business experience includes manufacturing, retailing, construction, land development, tourism and publishing. He has also been active in community affairs including the arts and studied voice at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. His multi-faceted career, in addition to a near-lifetime in politics, gives Hellyer a rare perspective on what has gone wrong with world economies. In recent years he has become interested in the extraterrestrial presence and their superior technology that we have been emulating. In September 2005 he became the first person of cabinet rank in the G8 group of countries to state unequivocally “UFO's are as real as the airplanes flying overhead.” He continues to take an interest in these areas and provides a bit of basic information about them in this book.

Beams of Light from a Well-Respected Statesman
By Gerald MacLennon
Unlike our Asian counterparts, the West often fails to accord our wise elders the honor they deserve - the status they have earned by devoting their lives to love of, and service to humankind. Paul Hellyer of Canada is one such man. Born in 1923, he is very much a hero of the 20th century; yet he continues his vigorous momentum into the new century, preparing youth for the hopes and challenges that lie ahead.

As former Minister of Defense for Canada and cabinet member during both the Pearson and Trudeau administrations, Hellyer is certain that technology currently exists to replace the ecologically-destructive world oil economy. He argues that, while difficult and financially threatening to "big oil," a gradual transition can, and must be implemented post haste, warning that ten years is just about all the time we have left before the ecological damage to our planet becomes irreversible.

"Failure to disclose a clean energy alternative to fossil fuels," he writes, "is worse than a crime against humanity. It's a crime against creation and the Creator."

His book speaks volumes about crimes against planet Earth. He investigates them from many perspectives, laying out charges against perpetrators, and in his wisdom, offers rehabilitation plans to assure today's youth that they will inherit a world redeemed from near destruction.

Minister Hellyer reminds his American readers of the long-standing economic dirty tricks, the incessant meddling in the internal affairs of other nations and myriads of injustices carried out by the United States government under the banner of democracy, freedom and, ironically, peace - also that, because of U.S. news media collusion, such outrages rarely reach the eyes and ears of the average Yankee.

"If President George W. Bush wanted to find the real axis of evil," writes Hellyer, "he had only look at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) and the World Trade Organization."

Calling the IMF and World Bank the enforcers of globalization, he explains how they "beat the bejeebers out of any country that won't accept the Washington Consensus and open its borders to rape and pillage by international banks and multinational corporations. The Enforcers work hand in glove with the U.S. Department of the Treasury (DOT) and Wall Street, for which the DOT is an agent."

In the very first chapters, author Hellyer, plunges into a heretofore taboo subject. He speaks openly about how our world has been visited extensively for six decades by entities of advanced intelligence from other worlds. He stands bravely alone as the world's highest-ranking government official to shine a beam of light on this ET presence that has lurked in the shadows of the tabloid world for far too long.

Over 500 atmospheric nuclear weapon detonations occurred between 1945 and 1960. Airborne radioactive dust from the Nevada testing site fell on most of America's heartland, the Rocky Mountain States and southern portions of Alberta and Ontario. Full extent of the damage to human, animal and plant life may never be known.

The intense flash produced by the detonation of those bombs traveled millions of kilometers across outer space, crossing the trade routes of our galaxy. Inadvertently, said flashes became warning signals to technologically-advanced space travelers that we human beings are now so smart we know how to annihilate all life on our planet including us. Any federation of planets - and there must be at least one in our sector of the universe - upon receiving our unintended clarion call would be duty-bound to come investigate just what "the naked apes on the blue planet" are up to now.

Without saying so directly, Mister Hellyer hints that since their arrival en masse around 1947, our Visitors have been studying us for any number of possible reasons, hopefully one is to ascertain if a generous portion of humanity may be worthy of salvation because of our ability to manifest the virtue called `love' - which in all likelihood is universal, sans boundaries of time, space and dimensions.

The book is subtitled "A Survival Plan for the Human Species" because Hellyer indentifies the greatest barriers to love and compassion currently existing on earth. He seeks to bring us to the realization that such barriers can and must be broken but only if we collectively begin work now to right our wrongs.

The barriers are:

1. Absence of love because of our differences in race, religion, philosophy, world view and political ideology. By example, in Chapter 2, he focuses on the existing animosities in he Holy Land between the descendants of Abraham (the Jews and Arabs) and those who claim to be followers of the Prince of Peace and Prophet of Love, Jesus.

2. Fundamentalist adherence to sacred books that have been incorrectly copied and translated - one example being the Gospel of John in the Christian New Testament, the interpretation of which has justified anti-Jewish persecution over the past two millennia - culminating with the greatest of all persecutions, genocide from 1939 through 1945. During the Holocaust, over six million Jewish men, woman and children were heartlessly murdered.

3. The universal worship of Mammon (money) in lieu of practicing tzadik v'khesed (righteousness and loving-kindness); to wit, bowing down before the altar of wealth, avarice, and greed combined with a willingness to perform any heinous act, including murder, to acquire more riches and power.

Hellyer paraphrases the words of the Christ, "You cannot love God and Mammon. You cannot serve two masters. You will love one and hate the other."

The Worshipers of Mammon, says the author, are the godless of all nationalities, races and ethnicities who exalt personal wealth and power above all else - men and women sans conscience, blinded to seeing nothing beyond their own immediate financial gratification. As a world-class economist for over 50 years, Minister Hellyer, having participated in many policy-making conferences at national and international levels, now advocates a non-violent overthrow of the current world system of economics because it has failed the citizenry time and again.

Hellyer knows that adherents to the cult of Mammon intentionally repress the poor nations of the world, allowing them no opportunity to develop due to ruthless economic tactics that drain the natural resources of such countries with no payment or reward to the poor citizen, only the ruling elite.

He boldly points out that our current world economy is dominated primarily by the governing powers of the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the multinational corporate elite... for these puppeteers there is no such word as `love.' Keeping the current, highly flawed economic system afloat necessitates periodic recessions and depressions and continual warfare - conditions that may not harm the rich and powerful but create massive devastation on we, the so-called little people, as one British Petroleum spokesman recently described us.

It's a diabolical system, Hellyer writes, that penalizes compassion and exalts greed. Who suffers the most? Answer: the meek, the peacemakers, the honest; and average families who request nothing more than fair treatment and a hopeful tomorrow for their children.

Also in Chapter 9, "Ending the World Financial Crisis," Mister Hellyer explains in layman's terms the economic errors leading up to the panic of 2008. If nothing else, this book is well worth the price for its information regarding global economics.

Such are the problems of the human race delineated in "Light at the End of the Tunnel." Where Hellyer differs from mere prophets of doom, is that he offers up a step by step "Political Agenda" in Chapter 10 of his book that, if activated, would set in motion a rapid reversal of the errors and evils of the status quo.

In the final analysis, Paul Hellyer's greatest differentiation from other authors on current affairs is that he asks us to imagine how we must be perceived by our extraterrestrial visitors. Observing our violent nature, do they regard us as a little backwater species not much smarter than our hairy cousins who swing from vine to vine in the lush green rain forests? Hellyer points out that the ET's have been studying us for at least 63 years, possibly hundreds or thousands. No doubt they find us entertaining - something akin to a galactic soap opera. We are pathetic, funny, maddening, silly, disgusting and, we can only hope that --in that name of all that is decent - they find some of us worthy of perpetuation.

Other reviewers may comment, "I didn't read all of that in Paul Hellyer's `Light at the End of the Tunnel.'"

As a concerned world citizen, lagging just one generation behind the former Defense Minister, I say, "Ah, but you failed to read between the lines."

By Lizzy W.
From our religious interpretation, evolving politics and corruption among the wealthy corporate and banking elites, Hellyer explains where our nation, and world has gone wrong to create the financial mess we're in and what to do about it. Our American military shadow government has gotten so powerful it sways decisions toward war when we should be striving for global peace. Greed, power and secrecy is the enemy and this book explains what must be done if we are to survive to a time of peace, prosperity for all and to save our planet.

Paul Hellyer - A Man WHO KNOWS - Honorable Former Canadian Defense Minister
By Lois Lane
To sum up this book Briefly, this is an extremely informative book, and it is very rare when a Former Minister of Defense speaks out concerning the Largest Cover-Up in the last 150 years. The Right Honorable Paul Hellyer was a Defense Minister in Canada, with INSIDE information. As a Defense Minister he had access to knowledge that a general lay person would Not have. He is the first person of Cabinet Rank in the G8 group of countries to state that UFO's are as Real as the airplanes that fly over our heads and that Vistors that are very similar to us have indeed been visting Earth for thousands of years and are very Real. He speaks about Free Energy, banking, our economic situations, and Paul states: "Failure to disclose a clean energy alternative to fossil fuels," he writes, "is worse than a crime against humanity. It's a crime against creation and the Creator." We can not be that arrogant or ignorant to think that we are the only Biological creatures in this universe. Where there are billions of stars and millions of planets.
Paul Hellyer and witnesses from 10 other countries, attended the Citizen Hearings from April 29 to May 3, 2013 in Washington, DC in front of former members of the US Congress speaking about Disclosure to ALL Citizens, regarding Alien visitors, free energy, the World Bank (the enforcers of Globalization). You can watch these videos on line - Citizen Hearings Disclosure 2013. Paul Hellyer is an extremely Intelligent man. This book is a Must Read, and the information is definitely verifable.
