As the subtitle of her book state, "one combination of points can treat many diseases." Dr Lee found the theoretical basis for this combination in the Nei Jing. "When the stomach and spleen, the central jiao, are attached by emotion, pure qi cannot ascend to the brain, and the evil qi, the waster, cannot descent," she explains. To facilitate the free flowing of qi in the central jiao, to benefit the liver as well as the kidneys and spleen, to force the evil qi to go down, and to improve brain function, Dr. Lee chooses a bilateral combination of 10 points. It is a valuable tool for any acupuncturist and Dr. Lee details how these points can be used to treat specific illnesses. Miriam Lee has been practicing acupuncture for over 40 years. She came to the United States from Singapore where she lived for 17 years after leaving mainland China in 1949. In China, she was a nurse and midwife before becoming an acupuncturist and lived through the Japanese occupation and World War II.

When she arrived in California, acupuncture was illegal. So Miriam worked on a factory assembly line and gave treatments quietly out of her home, later sharing a space with an open-minded MD. In April 1974, Miriam was arrested for practicing medicine without a license. With the overwhelming support of her patients, she was acquitted and made part of an acupuncture research project at San Francisco University where she practiced until 1976 when acupuncture was legalized in California.

Miriam Lee has been an important voice in the promotion of acupuncture and acupuncture legislation in California, has taught hundreds of Western students, and has treated thousands of patients. Today, Miriam is semi-retired and resides in Palo Alto, CA.

About the Author
Author K-Rahn Vallatine was once a wayward youth himself. After a series of wake up calls, he made a decision to be committed to both the betterment of himself mentally and spiritually and to those in the community around him. He works on the frontlines mentoring and assisting both “at-risk” and what he calls “beyond risk” (those who are currently or formerly incarcerated) youth. Throughout the years, K-Rahn has made waves as an underground Hip Hop artist, has previously served as a school teacher, teaching in both the private and public school systems, has sat on the Board of Directors of a charter school, has years of experience working in Los Angeles’ juvenile halls and juvenile detention camps, and has stood as a keynote speaker for conferences, youth empowerment events and webinars. He has recently written a Hip Hop Life Skills curriculum, entitled Live Above The Hype. This curriculum analyzes Hip Hop culture to promote character development & pro-social values, merging social-emotional skills with cognitive learning. K-Rahn merges his entertainment talents and resources with his background in education and juvenile justice.

About the Author
Prof. Dr. med. Wolfgang Gaebel is Professor of Psychiatry at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Medical Faculty, Heinrich-Heine-University, Düsseldorf, Germany. He was Chairman of the German Society for Biological Psychiatry and of the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology. He is a Member of the scientific Advisory Board of the German Medical Association. He is active in various roles within the World Psychiatric Association, including as Chairman of the German Anti-Stigma Association and of the Section on Schizophrenia.

An Enigma Wrapped Up In A Letter

Although not quite unique, Thomas Pynchon's approach to narration is extremely unusual. Often he seems to drone on in endless detail. At times his books read like a description of a vaudeville slapstick routine. Commonly, narrative structure, presumably at the heart of most novels, seems abandoned, or even purposely ignored. The upshot of this is that Thomas Pynchon's novels are strange, and decidedly not for everyone.
Of course the flip side is that for those who find Pynchon to their liking he is a rare treat, an intriguing enigma that you simply cannot stop talking about. Such is the case with V., a novel that over the years has shown a propensity to spark almost endless debate. Ostensibly it is the story of two men, Stencil and Benny Profane. Benny spends the greater part of the novel tramping around New York City with his friends, the Whole Sick Crew, generally not doing much of anything except procrastinating and running through various jobs and friends. Stencil spends most of the novel a quest of sorts, using a unique technique to track down details about an elusive and mysterious woman known only as V.
It has been noted that it is a technique of Pynchon's to surround the reader in layer after layer of detail and leave her to ferret out some sense; V. is certainly in keeping with that tradition. Wrapped up in this book is enough social critique, pop culture, historical theory, hilarious humor, and prediction of the future to make the reader's head spin like the roulette wheel at a casino. Rather than a shortcoming, this overwhelming downpour of data is one of the best parts of V., as there is just enough cohesion among the disparate elements that certain associations, even theories, can be developed. But are the associations really there or just in the reader's head? That is one of the questions Pynchon aches to ask.
Also central to V. is the idea of mechanization and routinization. Several characters in V. (including V herself) become more and more mechanized as time passes. Further, several elements of V. suggest the mechanization of society. Linked to this idea of mechanization is that of routinization, and Pynchon seems to say that the mechanization of modern life has helped create a society that is locked in routine. This theme of routinazation is found in both large and small instances. On the small side is Benny Profane (among others) who is continually unable to break out of the boundaries he has set on his life. ...
I feel my review of V. would not be complete without a few words about Pynchon's amazing breadth of knowledge. Diverse places such as New York City, Malta, Paris, and Africa are made the setting for several of the book's scenes and these locations are discussed with such authority, knowledge, and familiarity that the reader is convinced that Pynchon must have spent five years living in each. Additionally Pynchon integrates a great deal of information into the plot of V. A sampling of such information would include: explicit procedures for a nosejob, World War I fighter pilots, naval vessels, jazz musicians, Machiavelli, modern art, classical art, automobile safety tests, and the Holy Bible. Even at the tender age of 24 Pynchon had filled his head with enough information to inscribe nearly each of the 500 pages of V. with a certain subtext or reference.
Rather than review V. by presenting a plot summary I have tried to express a few of the ideas Pynchon works with. I have done this because V. thrives on non-linearity and a plot summary would be pointless and would do little to give a potential reader a true feel for what V. might be like. Instead I have chosen a few elements that I feel are at the heart of V., and have discussed them. For those who enjoy immersing themselves in a book and look forward to thorough discussions when they are done there are few books I can recommend above V. But for those who prefer more traditional, even formulaic, books I should warn that V., while in my opinion excellent, may not be to their liking. Despite these admonitions I would recommend this book to as many people as possible, as I do believe that everyone should experience V. This fine book may be a difficult taste to acquire, but one well worth the effort.

The Systemized Dehumanization of Society

As far as I'm concerned, V, the enigmatic understated protagonist in Pynchon's first novel defies pigeonholing, and those readers who expect to be paid off for simply moving their eyes across the page, investing the same intellectual capital that might sustain a made for TV movie, will be sadly disappointed. Yes, Pynchon, like Joyce, Burgess, Borges, T.S. Eliot, Faulkner, et al., forces the reader to think, and for any genuine understanding, the reader must work, must do research, must have some basic knowledge of the references, must not be afraid to translate, for example, Schoenmacher into beauty maker and Mondaugen into moon eyes. A book like this challenges the reader rather than simply attempting to entertain him with a good yarn. So if you don't like word puzzles or obscure symbolism then stay away. If however veiled references to Stravinsky's Rites of Spring and how the WWII icon "Kilroy" originated and the mechanics of yo-yo-ing intrigues you, then plunge in.
The book is ostensibly about Herbert Stencil's quest to discover the identity of a mysterious woman who makes several appearances in his father's journal, but it's really Stencil's quest to understand his father (in German father is Vater) and perhaps, ultimately, to find himself. Also, there are the colorful escapades of the Whole Sick Crew, the group that Herbert hangs with, including Benny Profane, a navyman, and Rachel Hourglass who has a fetish for her automobile.
In a sense, fetishism, fondness for things, is the gist of the book; everytime V. appears she has one more artificial limb, or glass eye. She is less human and more thing, and perhaps this is what Pynchon is saying about the twentieth century and the World Wars that helped to shape it. In another sense the subject of the book is defined by its negative space. The holocaust and concentration camps of WWII are never discussed, but the theme of man's inhumanity to man is so central that the lack of mention seems intentional.
Finally, however, V. comes to mean so many things more than just the systemized dehumanization of modern man: Vanishing Point, Vector, Velocity, Verboten, and Vater are but a few of the many possibles (see Alan Moore's V is for Vendetta for more)so that it becomes impossible to capture who and what V. really is. Like Moby Dick she is everything and nothing. Worth reading and re-reading for those who are more concerned with literary content then a good story.

History, Technology and Alligators--V. is one great book!

Thomas Pynchon's first book V. is one of the great
books of the last 50 years. It is a book that is
filled with symbol and meaning and portent. At the
simplest level it is a story about Benny Profane,
a poor "schlemil" whose pathetic life is filled
with almost surreal adventures that lead him to
gangs and love and alligators in the sewers! But
Benny's adventures become inexplicablyintertwined
with those of Stencil and the mysterious V. And
therein lies the great challenge and great pleasure
of Pynchon. There is a search to discover meaning
and perhaps to discover one's own history. Pynchon's
tale leads back to the diplomatic intrique
preceding World War I and somehow connects us with
the misadventures of Benny. And all the while, like
some great mystery thriller in reverse, the deeper
one gets into V., the more information that is
revealed, the more complex the mystery becomes.
Indeed, the thrill of Pynchon is to become ensnared
in that mystery and try to find meaning in that
complex and interconnected web. Ultimately, perhaps,
like all the great questions in life, the question
of the meaning of who V. is and the meaning of the
book itself may never be answer. But the power of
this novel is that it draws you in to consider that
mystery. The book, somehow, finds connections
between the great historical events of the beginning
of this century and several generations of
characters who themselves are all interconnected
and the ever-changing technology of this century.
Is V. a mysterious woman, a cause of the wars of
this century or the essential meaninglessness
of modern society? Read V. and discover that answer
for yourself!

Para mostrarse menos pat�tica frente a sus acosadores decide fingir una relaci�n, pero con el paso del tiempo fracasa. Justo en ese momento, aparece, como por arte de magia, el supuesto pr�ncipe azul de la historia, quien la rescata y deposita en las manos de su t�a, una ex modelo que parece haberse planteado el dif�cil objetivo de lograr que la muchacha encuentre su belleza interior.

Renata es, sin duda, la novela que m�s satisfacciones me ha dado. Y no s�lo por haber sido una de las m�s le�das, sino� por las reacciones de la gente al recorrer sus p�ginas. Bast� publicarla para que todos tuvieran algo que decir. Pero todav�a me emociono cuando recuerdo las palabras de una muchacha, que habiendo le�do el primer cap�tulo escribi� para decirme que ella era Renata. Y de inmediato me cont� con lujo de detalles su vida, que coincid�a con la historia de los tres cap�tulos siguientes. Y, como� Renata, tambi�n ella� se encontraba en la encrucijada del cap�tulo cinco y no sab�a c�mo proseguir. Claro! Le faltaba leer el final de su propia historia.
Aunque m�s a�n me sorprendieron las palabras de otras muchas lectoras que encontraron en Renata consuelo para una dif�cil situaci�n personal. Quiz�s por eso quiero tanto esta novela que voy a compartir con ustedes.

Me encanto, siempre es refrescante leer una historia diferente , donde la protagonista es alguien com�n ,con inseguridades propias de los tiempos que vivimos, donde se exalta la imagen exterior por sobre el interior ; y la autora nos recuerda de manera sencilla que la mejor belleza surge de sentirse pleno interiormente; porque lo esencial es invisible a los ojos..

Ella crece, no literalmente!

Sin duda el libro va creciendo junto a su protagonista. No literalmente, todo lo contrario. Te obliga a reflexionar sobre la verdadera importancia de la belleza.
SPOILER ALERT!!
Ella, que es insegura, involuntariamente se pone en el papel de v�ctima porque no tiene la fortaleza de car�cter para no dejarse avasallar. Convalida todos los prejuicios envidiando la belleza en vez de apreciarla y se concentra en los otros en vez de en ella misma. Por lo tanto en su cambio, se vuelve fr�vola. Porque a pesar de que ella sufre la frivolidad del resto, si ella la envidia es porque en definitiva la lleva consigo.
Cada vez me doy m�s cuenta que me conmueven los reconocimientos que hace un personaje sobre otro que muri� prematuramente o que har� un sacrificio muy grande a costa de su propia vida. Y hubo un caso muy conmovedor que av�a la vida de la protagonista y le abre los ojos para ver la "APARIENCIA DE LA BELLEZA".
Esta autora siempre tiene algo bueno para ense�arnos o para reflexionar. Y al menos to, siempre termino coincidiendo.

About the Author
Kenneth J. Campbell is associate professor of political science and international relations and director of the international relations program at the University of Delaware. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, enlisted in the Marines after high school, and served in Vietnam from 1968-1969, earning eight medals including the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and joined the antiwar movement, becoming a leader in Vietnam Veterans Against the War. He earned his PhD in 1989 and has taught at several universities, written many articles, and authored the book, Genocide and the Global Village (Palgrave 2001).

I did not know of Kenneth Campbell but I do now. This is by far one of the clearest and most concise treatments of the subject. I found almost all of my questions anticipated and fully answered. I'm sure I'll be re-reading the book many more times.

Outstanding, emminently readable and well researched...a must read.

There are indeed some hard lessons of war. Professor Campbell has thoroughly analyzed the reasons for America's slow slide into the debacle of Vietnam and compared that situation to the current situation in Iraq. In both cases, there were solid reasons for the end result. In spite of all attempts to portray them as different, they are in essence, very similar.

In many respects, my experiences during the Vietnam War were similar to the author's. I was an F4 Phantom II fighter pilot at Ubon, Thailand at the same period of time. Although most of my missions were flown over North Vietnam and Laos, I flew strikes against Khe Sanh at the height of that battle. At the start of the war, I was a "true believer" in the cause and was most eager to participate. It's hard to give up ideas you've held onto so tenaciously for many years, but over time, I came to the belief that our involvement in Vietnam was a tragic strategic mistake. My recent book, Phantom Reflections: The Education of an American Fighter Pilot in Vietnam was my version of how those deeply held beliefs changed significantly over time.

At the start of the Iraq War, I had grave reservations about the wisdom of our proposed course of action for many of the same reasons I thought our Vietnam adventure was ill advised. This book does an excellent job of comparing the two situations and hopefully, will generate some significant discussions among those in a position to influence policy. Well done!

Restructured curriculum to take full advantage of this book

This book is exceptional. I just restructured the curriculum for my Human Development class to take full advantage of the book. This is the only book of it's kind. I gave it 4 stars simply because I would have appreciated more emphasis on acquiring psychiatric disabilities. Some of the prose could be trimmed as well. But over all, best book out there on this topic.
